In the past 6 years we have achieved many things thanks to our donors. Here’s what we’re most proud of:
– 320 children have found a safe haven in our kindergarten Gotitas de agua
– Hundreds of families have been counseled and supported by our psychology team
– 500 students have benefitted from our psychologists’ anti-violence trainings
– Over 3’000 children have spent a happy Christmas
Educational project Gotitas de agua – Raucana
A child’s most formative years span from birth to age 6. It is during these years that most of their intellect, social skills and personality are developed.
One of the biggest challenges with poverty is the self-perpetuating cycle often caused by lack of quality education in the first years of life.
This is why we started our efforts in the community of Raucana. Constituted in 1990 as one of the so-called pueblos jóvenes (young villages) on the outskirts of Lima, Raucana is one of the poorest suburbs of the Peruvian capital. In 2012, Gotas de agua started to build a beautiful kindergarten where previously there was none. Today it accommodates over 120 children from the disadvantaged families in Raucana and surrounding communities, giving them access to quality education thanks to 5 properly trained kindergarten teachers.
Professional care of the children is crucial: our staff members are highly qualified, constantly improving their skills in order to stay abreast of the latest practices and developments in early childhood education. The well-being and the emotional equilibrium of the children is our number one priority.
This is also why, since 2013, a psychologist works with the children and involves their parents through dialogue and workshops.
We want this to be sustainable and locally-led, which is why we were particularly happy that starting in 2013, the government started paying some of the salaries of our kindergarten teachers as well as for one auxiliary teacher. We maintain constant dialogue with the government as our ultimate goal is for the Ministry of Education to ultimately take financial responsibility for the costs of running the kindergarten each year. By 2015, the government was covering the salaries of five pre-school teachers and two auxiliary teachers.
Therefore, the project will become more and more independent of donations.
The project called “Gotas de agua – Raucana” contains our kindergarten Gotitas de agua, the psychology department, a day care center, and the organic garden.
